Author Visits

One way that you could work with Cambridge Children's Books and engage more with our books is to have an author visit from one of our Authors. Pip Barber and Gregoire Hodder would love to come to your school and talk about their books, phonics and how to make a book!

Pip Barber

Pip Barber is experienced in and excited about teaching phonics and early reading. She has taught in infant and primary schools for several years. Pip loves living in Cambridgeshire and has found its cities, towns and villages fascinating places to learn about... and start to write about!

Gregoire Hodder

Gregoire Hodder is a children’s book author and publisher and founder of Cambridge Children’s Books. A graduate of Cambridge University in Education and English Literature, Gregoire was born and raised in Cambridge. His writing is fun and playful but always conveys an important message. He sees reading as an important part of a child’s development, not only for literacy skills, but also for the development of morals and values such as empathy, love, and curiosity.

Workshops

Workshop (whole school, up to 6 hours of sessions)

Pip Barber and fellow author and owner of Cambridge Children’s Books, Gregoire Hodder will come to your school and talk to your students about the books they have written, illustrated and published.

The sessions will include:

  • Reading the books to the Children

  • Reading sessions on phonics including activities from our lesson plans, but will also bring along some additional resources, such as dressing-up clothes to help the children get into role, to make the session more interactive! 

  • Sessions on illustration with illustration examples and also practical sessions to get the children involved in making their own illustrations to tell a story.

  • Sessions publishing and making books with publisher, which includes a short talk from Publisher and some sessions where kids can put together their own books!

If you would like a workshop to be tailored to link to a particular project that your class is undertaking, please let us know beforehand and we can have a conversation about how to best personalise our visit to your school.

Class sessions

Class engagement (approximately 45 minutes per class of 30 children)

 

Pip Barber will come and speak to your class about the book that she has written, Cambridge Punting, a phonics book all about punting on the beautiful river cam in Cambridge.

 

The session will include:

 

  • Read the book to the children

  • Support the children within some whole class and group activities linked to phonics and reading. She will primarily deliver some activities from our lesson plans, but will also bring along some additional resources, such as dressing-up clothes to help the children get into role, to make the session more interactive! 

  • Answer the children's questions about the process of writing a book. These questions can be emailed ahead of time if you like.
